The Curly Scott: Redefining Hair Education and Growing with Vagaro
When you meet Scott, also known as The Curly Scott, prepare to be immediately struck by his passion for hair, storytelling, and making space for inclusion in the beauty industry. His journey started long before he became a salon owner and educator—back in a small Scottish village where he, as he recalls, “was the only person of color. My journey, going to high school first, going everywhere first, was unique.”
Hair was personal for Scott before it became professional. His adoptive mother was a hairdresser, and as a teenager, he experimented with his own styles that sometimes resulted in hilarious trial and error. “I took my mom’s perm lotion and actually straightened my own hair,” he laughed. “…within a week it fell out.”
What started as experiments soon turned into empowerment. “When I went to school, people would ask, ‘Who did that?’ And I said, ‘I designed it myself.’ People who had never noticed me before suddenly wanted me to design their haircuts. That was powerful.”
A Journey to Representation
By 16, Scott was working in salons but quickly realized that the cosmetology curriculum lacked any true education about Afro or textured hair. “That’s when we realized there was a problem, because I wasn’t included,” he said. He later discovered that ancient Egyptians, “the first people we talk about in our hair history, actually looked like me,” yet their hair types weren’t part of the mainstream training.
This drove Scott to pursue inclusive education for both him and future hairstylists. Today, he collaborated with institutions like Glasgow City College to update curriculums. “All we’re doing is filling in the gaps. If you know how to cut hair, then let’s look at the full spectrum. If you know how to color hair, let’s look at the full spectrum.”
Building The Curly Scott Brand
Scott created The Curly Scott, a salon and education brand dedicated to inclusivity and excellence using his personal experience as the foundation of the brand. His mission is to transform the way the industry sees curly hair, starting from founding BBCURLS™️ and The BB Hair Collective, both education platforms rooted in artistry, inclusion, and culture.
His business spans across salon services, education programs, and brand collaborations, and behind the scenes, he’s powered by Vagaro.
“My business has grown with Vagaro. I have a brand, The Curly Scott. At the push of a button, I got a website, which has been fantastic. I use the portal to book my courses. I also employ a team, and Vagaro works for that too.”
Scott loves that Vagaro is his one stop shop, but what stands out most to him is the partnership.
“What I love is that I don’t feel as a small business that I have any less attention than the big businesses. I’ve worked with other brands before, but with Vagaro, I’ve had full attention from the most important members of the team. Vagaro takes me seriously and adapt the software to benefit my business.”
How Vagaro Helps The Curly Scott
Scott has found Vagaro’s tools crucial for streamlining his services, both in the salon and in his education programs:
-
Consultation Forms: “Before my client comes in, they’ve already got a feel for the salon. It’s like reading The Matrix. I can quickly go through their responses before I sit down, which cuts time off my business—and time is money.”
-
Education Metrics: “For my education program, I use Vagaro forms before and after courses. We measure knowledge on a scale of 1-10, then again at the end. It’s been a really useful tool to show growth.”
-
Prepaid Packages & Add-Ons: “I like the idea that when clients book, they already know what they’re going to pay and have already prepaid. That locks in the appointment and creates structure in my diary. Vagaro even customized the packages for me so my clients can cherry pick almost a la carte but still keep it organized.”
A Voice for the Future
Scott is shaping the next generation of hairstylists through advocacy, education, and mentorship. He’s pushing for a beauty industry where no one falls through the cracks.
With Vagaro as his platform, he’s able to focus less on operations and more on that mission.
“Vagaro gives me the tools to run my brand, my salon, and my education program—all while giving me the attention I deserve.”
From a Scottish village to an international platform, The Curly Scott is proving that hairdressing can hold space for history, identity, and community.
